RPG Cliches
January 8th, 2007 by Magnus
As a lifelong gamer and an RPG fan I have come to accept the fact that RPG’s must be the most cliche-ridden genre in the videogame universe. You can’t deny the premise is usually the same: saving the world by collecting the crystals and/or slaying the evil overlord, while in the meantime proving your party members your worth and getting the girl in the end.
The cliches are everywhere and sometimes are even annoying, and I’m sure If you’ve played an RPG then you must have noticed things like:
- you can break into someone’s house, get all their items, and then walk out like nothing happened,
- you must complete senseless, neverending “errands” which you think will reward with the ultimate weapon, yet all you get in the end is a bag of fruits or something,
- you have the power to invoke meteors from space and hurl them at your enemies, travel through time, and summon powerful beasts, yet a shrub or a fence won’t let you cross to the other side of the map (thanks to my bro Jr. for pointing that one out!).
And the list goes on and on. That’s why when I found out this list, I just couldn’t stop laughing. Check it out here. A more extensive list can be found over here. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
